Stock Market Basics: How the New York Stock Exchange Works – Tutorial Cartoon (1952)

1952 thefilmarchived.blogspot.com A stock market or equity market is a public (a loose network of economic transactions, not a physical facility or discrete entity) for the trading of company stock (shares) and derivatives at an agreed price; these are securities listed on a stock exchange as well as those only traded privately. The size of the world stock market was estimated at about .6 trillion at the start of October 2008. The total world derivatives market has been estimated at about 1 trillion face or nominal value, 11 times the size of the entire world economy. The value of the derivatives market, because it is stated in terms of notional values, cannot be directly compared to a stock or a fixed income security, which traditionally refers to an actual value. Moreover, the vast majority of derivatives ‘cancel’ each other out (ie, a derivative ‘bet’ on an event occurring is offset by a comparable derivative ‘bet’ on the event not occurring). Many such relatively illiquid securities are valued as marked to model, rather than an actual market price. The stocks are listed and traded on stock exchanges which are entities of a corporation or mutual organization specialized in the business of bringing buyers and sellers of the organizations to a listing of stocks and securities together. The largest stock market in the United States, by market cap, is the New York Stock Exchange, NYSE. In Canada, the largest stock market is the Toronto Stock Exchange. Major European

    There is no safe container to store your values while you’re at work; not living your deepest values will leak on you

    No sudden moves: You’re looking emotional commitment right in the eye. slapCompany Question to you: Where do you stand?

    @StockMarketFunding HGD.TO and HZD.TO did some nice work for me today, wish I still had my HOD and HND from last week too! These flash crashes are happening a couple times a year now, so it pays to play the bear side when the markets seems overbought. Not sure when to lock into a rebound, I’ve already started on HOU and CENX…..

    nice vid.. but.. i see now how the economy is put on steroids.. but where does the wealth itself come from that needs to go in the industry to support this model?

    like, ok.. we can make the market swell up.. but wont this invitably create more demand than the acutal raw material wealth can account for?

    or am i just an idiot here? -please let me know if i am!

    @islamconstitution I am no expert on this matter either, but it seems to me as though we have used the Stock Market to build up larger corporations and Industries on credit, instead of legitimate money, but it is not in danger of collapsing unless the Corporation or Industry bites of more than it can chew, and goes bankrupt, in which case, the credit disappears instead of converting into money, which is how it all breaks down (normally) to stockholders.

    @InstntMashedPotatoes
    true.. thats even another way of looking at it.. my question is how can they not bite more than they can chew, knowing that they always have to compete, with other corporations, who always also do the same thing to compete.. its a credit race.. how can that not create a cancer like credit problem?

    @islamconstitution Like it said in the video, most companies start off small, they look at projections for the year, where they think they will be for next year, and they take a certain amount of capital depending on what they see. Many small companies who do this work on their own without an investment banker do bite off more than they can chew, but it doesn’t effect the economy very much because it’s a small company. It’s when large companies lose money instead of gaining that it’s a problem.
